Walnut Street's Musical Chairs: Who Moved Into Whose Old Storefront in Shadyside

Most of the new storefronts on Shadyside's Walnut Street since early 2025 are moves into somebody else's old space. Apple took the Gap's building. Citizens is taking Apple's old one. RH filled the Banana Republic corner. Paris Baguette moved into a Williams Sonoma space that had been empty for three years. Pull the addresses apart and you find a short chain of relocations packed into roughly two blocks.

The tenants who left were mostly clothing stores, and the ones replacing them mostly are not. That change in mix happened one lease at a time, and the last three pieces haven't opened yet.

The Chain That Started at the Gap

The clearest way to follow Walnut Street's turnover is by address, in order.

  1. The Gap leaves 5436 Walnut St. and Apple moves in. Apple left its longtime store at 5508 Walnut St. and reopened in the former Gap space on August 9, 2025, WPXI reported in a story shared by the Pittsburgh Business Times.
  2. Apple's old 5508 Walnut St. goes to a bank. Citizens is closing its Shadyside branch inside the Giant Eagle at 5550 Centre Ave. and moving into the former Apple store. The company told the Business Times it is "currently targeting late Q4 2026/early Q1 2027 for the relocation." It filed with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on September 4 to close the Giant Eagle branch.
  3. Banana Republic leaves the corner of Walnut and Ivy. The store at 5542 Walnut St. closed on March 31, 2025, after about three decades, when its lease on the 15,000-square-foot corner ran out, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
  4. RH takes that corner. Pittsburgh Magazine reported that RH opened there on January 16, 2026, after the space had sat empty since the previous March.

Herky Pollock of Legacy Realty Partners, the broker on the Banana Republic site, told the Post-Gazette in February 2025 that the departure was a chance to "upgrade the current tenant mix." He called the wave of turnover a "changing of the guard." He also said that Apple's move, plus filling Apple's old store, would let more than 30,000 square feet on the street be modernized.

The 5500 Block, Door by Door

Most of the action sits on one block. Five of the addresses in this story fall between 5504 and 5542 Walnut St., so one stroll past a single row of buildings covers most of what's changing.

Address Previous tenant Current or next tenant Status as of mid-October 2026
5504 Walnut St. Rite Aid Saatva, as reported No opening date announced
5508 Walnut St. Apple Citizens branch Targeted late Q4 2026 or early Q1 2027
5514 Walnut St. Williams Sonoma, vacant since 2022 Paris Baguette Open since December 2025
5533 Walnut St. Apricot Lane JETSET Pilates Expected 2027
5542 Walnut St. Banana Republic RH Open since January 16, 2026

A few details behind those rows:

The Rite Aid at 5504 Walnut St. was on the chain's Pennsylvania closure list that WTAE published in May 2025. In August 2026 the Pittsburgh Business Times reported that Saatva, the mattress brand, planned a store in the former Rite Aid space. As of this writing, Saatva's own location directory lists only one Pennsylvania viewing room, at 1712 Walnut St. in Philadelphia.

Paris Baguette took a storefront that had been empty since Williams Sonoma closed in 2022. The South Korean bakery chain has about 4,000 locations, including one at The Block Northway in Ross that opened in 2024, Pittsburgh Magazine noted.

RH, which used to be called Restoration Hardware, calls the Banana Republic corner "RH Pittsburgh, The Gallery on Walnut Street." It has four levels of RH Interiors, RH Modern and RH Outdoor furniture, plus antiques and an RH Interior Design studio.

What Left, and What Took Its Place

Banana Republic, the Gap and Apricot Lane all sold clothing. Rite Aid was a pharmacy, and Williams Sonoma sold kitchenware. The businesses moving in are a bakery, a coffee shop, a bank branch, a Pilates studio, a mattress showroom, and a furniture gallery with a design studio. Several of these are places you go to sit down, try something out, or keep an appointment.

The far end of the street follows the same pattern. Commonplace Coffee soft-opened at 5743 Walnut St. on June 22, 2026, in the former Georgie's Corner Cafe, NEXTpittsburgh reported. It's the company's ninth café, and part of its bakery operation now works out of the building. Commonplace first set its grand-opening party for July 18. It then moved the date to August 1 because of hazardous air quality and forecast thunderstorms.

Clothing hasn't left the street entirely. Brandy Melville opened at 5430 Walnut St. on February 20, 2026, according to a student news report. The space had been a bookstore, per the Post-Gazette. Pittsburgh Magazine reported it as the chain's first Pittsburgh store and its third in Pennsylvania.

National names haven't pushed out the independents. In the same Post-Gazette story, John Henne, co-president of the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce, described a "beautiful mix" of independent businesses. He named Toadflax, Ten Toes and his family's Henne Jewelers next to the national brands coming in.

Henne gave the business case for the turnover earlier on. In February 2025, as Banana Republic was getting ready to close, WPXI reported that, according to the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce, Walnut Street foot traffic was up 20 percent since 2023. Henne told the station that more stores were interested in coming, and that once one or two of the open spaces filled, "there will be very few openings on the street." Since then, the Banana Republic corner, the Williams Sonoma space, the Georgie's Corner Cafe building and the old bookstore have all reopened. Leases have been signed or reported for the old Apple, Apricot Lane and Rite Aid spaces.

Three Doors Still Waiting

The rest of the chain is still to come, and none of it has a firm opening day yet.

  • Citizens at 5508 Walnut St. has the nearest target. The bank's own estimate is late Q4 2026 or early Q1 2027, so the Giant Eagle branch stays open until the move.
  • JETSET Pilates at 5533 Walnut St., in the former Apricot Lane, signed its lease and expects to open in 2027, WPXI reported in September. The local franchisees are Joe and Marissa Rosenbloom, and Herky Pollock represented them on the lease. The brand's Shadyside page still says "Coming Soon."
  • Saatva at 5504 Walnut St. is the least settled. A plan has been reported, but there's no announced date and no Pittsburgh listing on the brand's site yet.

Once all three open, the 5500 block will have a mattress showroom, a bank branch, a bakery, a Pilates studio and a four-story furniture gallery. Two years earlier, that same row had a pharmacy, an Apple store, an empty kitchenware space, a clothing boutique and Banana Republic.

On the Calendar While the Paper Stays Up

These are the dates on the Shadyside business district's events calendar between now and the end of the year:

  • Trick or Treating with Liberty School, Friday, October 30, 1 to 3 p.m., on Walnut Street
  • Shadyside Perks & Pours, Thursday, November 12, at Paris Baguette, one of the newest tenants on the 5500 block
